New Year, New Bag

January has a funny energy, doesn’t it?
One minute you’re eating your body weight in cheese and chocolate, surrounded by the debris of a Christmas well spent, wondering what day it is. The next, you’re back in the grey, everyday banality of real life, quietly punishing yourself with wildly unrealistic New Year’s resolutions.
I have a strict “no resolutions” policy. For me, January is the perfect time to lean into comfort. The Danes have absolutely nailed it with the whole hygge thing, and I am fully on board. Think cosy layers, a slower pace, stews, candles, and small, satisfying pleasures rather than big, shouty life overhauls.
Kudos to those who have the inner strength to eat salads and hit the gym whilst it's -1ºc outside, but that really ain't me!

The New Year does not need a total personality overhaul, a new wardrobe, or a colour-coded life plan. Sometimes it just needs one small, satisfying upgrade. Something practical. Something lovely. Something that makes everyday life feel a bit more pulled together.

Which is where a really good bag comes in.

January energy: soft knits, hot drinks, zero ambition to completely overhaul one's entire life. Perfect.

A fresh start, without the pressure

The idea that January has to be about reinvention is exhausting.

You do not need to become a “new you”.

But a gentle reset?
A small, intentional change?
That can feel surprisingly good.

[And yes, this is the point where I gently, yet unapologetically, sneak my bags into the conversation. I’m totally not sorry, but please do stick with me].

A bag you actually love using can be that change.

Not flashy. Not trend-led. Just quietly brilliant.

The sort of bag that works with your real life, is well made, practical and doesn't fall apart at the slightest whiff of having to work hard (like the cheap tat that most places peddle these days).

School runs, workdays, lunches out, evenings in, weekends away.

The bag you reach for without thinking because it just works.

Why January Is a Brilliant Time to Choose a New Bag

People tend to think of handbags as a “special occasion” purchase. Something for birthdays, Christmas, big events, or a new job... and don't get me wrong, they totally are, (so be sure to hit the Bag Boutique button at the top of the page if you have any of those coming up 😉).

But January is actually the perfect moment.

It’s when you finally notice which bag irritated you all last year. The strap that never sits properly. The zip that sticks. The one that looks fine but gives up the moment it has to do any real work. And worst of all... the cheaply made, tatty one with the peeling pleather *shudder*

A really good leather bag earns its place quickly. It makes everyday routines easier and outfits feel finished, even when you’re running purely on coffee and good intentions.

What Makes a Good Everyday Bag?

If you’ve ever wondered what actually makes a bag worth buying, you’re not alone. It’s a question people ask constantly.

A good everyday bag should be:

  • Well made, with strong stitching and quality leather
  • Practical, with sensible pockets and secure fastenings
  • Timeless enough to work all year round
  • Comfortable to carry, even when it’s full
  • Absolutely not made from petrochemical based faux leather!

All Lilly & Jude bags are double stitched and designed to cope with real life. They’re made to be used*, not babied, and treated before leaving the studio so the leather stays protected and supple.

*I mean, obviously don't be carrying bricks around in them or bashing them against trees and stuff like that... they're made from leather, not titanium!

A Bag That Fits Your Actual Life

One of the most common mistakes people make is buying a bag for an imagined life rather than their real one.

The best bag is not the biggest or the fanciest. It’s the one that fits what you actually carry day to day. Phone, keys, purse, maybe a notebook, maybe snacks. Nothing more, nothing less.

Thoughtful design makes all the difference. Internal pockets that keep things organised. a space saving integrated purse for your cards and cash. Straps that sit comfortably. A shape that works whether you’re heading to work, meeting friends, or dashing out last minute.

Buying Less, Choosing Better

January (and the loooooong ass gap between December and January's pay days) often brings a quiet urge to be a bit more intentional for the upcoming year. Fewer impulse buys. Fewer quick fixes. More things that genuinely earn their keep.

A handcrafted leather bag fits beautifully into that mindset.

Instead of replacing cheap bags over and over, one well-made bag does the job properly. It lasts for years, reduces waste, and gets better with age.

Rescued leather adds another layer of satisfaction. It turns material that would have gone to landfill into something useful, beautiful, and long lasting.

New Year, Same Fabulous You.
Just Better Equipped.

A new bag doesn’t change who you are. It just makes life a little easier.

It keeps your things organised.

It pulls outfits together.

It quietly supports your day without fuss.

The sort of bag that works with your real life. One that’s well made, practical, and doesn’t fall apart at the slightest whiff of having to work hard, unlike the cheap tat most places peddle these days.

A good everyday bag is durable, timeless, made from quality leather, and designed to work with real life all year round... all without breaking the bank or literally costing the earth!
